Renderings

The project team worked with consultants SWCA to develop three conceptual site renderings. The sites were selected as representative models for how adaptation strategies could be implemented in residential, working waterfront, and critical infrastructure areas.

Residential

Many residential neighborhoods along the coast are at risk of flooding from sea level rise and increasing storms. There are several different strategies communities can take to protect their residents.

Coastal adaptation strategies can not only provide protection from flooding, but also enhance community character, provide stormwater runoff mitigation, and support natural habitat .

Working Waterfront

Working waterfronts in the Casco Bay region support a wide range of uses and infrastructure. Rising sea levels threaten these important economic centers for the community.

A wide range of adaptation strategies can protect both the coastline and the infrastructure of the working waterfront. Implementing innovative strategies will allow these complex areas to thrive in the changing environment

Critical Infrastructure

Several towns have critical infrastructure, such as wastewater treatment plants, along the coastline. Sea level rise and coastal erosion threaten to impact these town services.

Use of nature-based solutions, such as living shorelines, provide a natural protection again flooding. This can help prevent erosion and preserve the critical infrastructure.
